East Village Lofts is a new apartment building that will be saving and re-using the front facade of an existing Art Deco church. Consisting of 34 apartment units, this ground up new construction project is being built primarily out light gauge metal framing, topped with green roofs, and clad in metal cladding, aluminum windows and curtain wall. The lightweight structural system allows the five story building to rest on a shallow foundation system. Wall and floor systems are being panelized off site and swung into place with crane, while the facade of the existing church will be stabilized and remain in place. While not applying for LEED certification, the project is following the same green design principles utilized in the construction of Wicker Park Lofts, including using spray foam insulation, and LED light fixtures throughout.
